  22. I agree with Robert that Director has some *serious* limitations - the handling of
  23. palettes and color depth reduction is *horrible*.
  24.  
  25. Lingo is powerful but very verbose.

  27. I haven't worked with icon-based systems, but the frames analogy works well for me.

  29. Shockwave doesn't allow for repeat loops (haven't been able to figure out why!) or
  30. for linked media. i.e. no avi's. This was a shock for me after I spent a week
  31. designing a roller coaster for an online carnival (it's on my gallery page) and
  32. ended up having to display it in 4-bit color depth to keep it under 3 megs!

  34. Any compressed image format is internally decompressed when it gets into Director.
  35. i.e those 200K frames that you compressed down to 8K are all now 200K or more
  36. again. Nasty.

  38. Hopefully Director 5 and Shockwave 2 will remedy some of these probs. I spoke to
  39. Macromedia about the linked media thing and supposedly that wil be fixed by this
  40. summer.

  45. 1. Is anyone getting Shockwave to work properly, i.e. NOT crash Netscape? In fact 
  46. the latest Win95 version doesn't work at all on NT...

  48. 2. Sizzler (http://www.totallyhip.com) allows for interlaced, looping, linked anims 
  49. and the plugin actually works on Win3.1, Win95, WinNT and Mac. The "compiler" or 
  50. whatever you want to call it is Mac only right now (accepts #PICTs and QT), but you 
  51. don't have to own a $1000 authoring package to put an inline movie on the web!
